A special book

posted by adminin Books,The Writer's LifeComments (7)

My first novel Jillaroo has been a runaway bestseller and is still selling by the truckload since its release in 2002.

It’s a special book, because I began it in 1999 when John and I went to work on a cattle station at Rolleston, Queensland.

I love the strong character in Rebecca Saunders and felt I could put more into her while I actually lived station life – my jobs included stock camp cooking, dunny cleaning, snigging bulls and riding in the chopper on bull catching adventures.

I wanted a modern day female heroine who I could relate to. As a country gal, I found many Chick-Lit characters tended to irritate me and leave me uninspired.

Rebecca is an Aussie girl who had to be real to me … a girl who I would go to the pub with to share a few beers, talk dogs, farming and horses with and laugh with. Rebecca Saunders is a girl many country women can identify with … and if she were real, she’d be my best friend.

I find Rachel Treasure books amazing. I love every aspect of the bush and would love to one day own a small property to breed horses. I am very proud that we have a down to earth aussie lady writing about the aspects of life on the land. Congratulations on two great books and I can’t wait for the next one.

Hi Rachel,

I’ve read both your books (twice!) and just wanted to say how much I loved them! Rebecca came across as such a “real” character and someone I could relate to. From start to finish I couldn’t put it down!!! I’m a regular B&S goer, love my horses and dogs, as well as a good old rum, and it was fantastic to see someone with similar interests to me life in a book.

My only complaint is that you don’t have more books out! hehe I love reading and always go for a book with a rural setting, but sadly there aren’t that many about.

Thanks again and keep up the good work!

A wonderful book, where the characters come alive! Wish there were more country women around like Bec Saunders!

G’day,

Im a 15 year old girl who has read both your books heaps of time.

I’m doing a thing in English where I have to write a letter saying why it should be part of the English work we have to do, I picked your book Jillaroo. It has been my dream to be like Bec. Thanks.

Hey Rachel,

I am a former city girl from Australia living in the UK and picked up Jillaroo at Brisbane airport on a recent trip home. I loved it so much and couldn’t put it down. Upon returning to the UK I tried to get Stockman, but was unable to. So I bought it on ebay and had it shipped. Once again I was not able to tear the book from my hands – I read it in 3 days.

Apparently I am a country girl at heart! I now live in a country village and loving it! You’ve converted me. Please write more for this aussie girl far from home and outback.

I do manage to get Mcleods Daughters so I get a little tiny fix. But as I read I can so see, hear and almost smell life back home.

Funnily enough they do sell RM Williams boots and Drizabones here …

Hey Rach,
Congrats on the new book. Remember cleaning all the little bottles in the Gunya, the Billabong and the Humpy? We sure did have fun, didn’t we? And the beers under the clothsline on a lazy Sunday afternoon, they sure did take some beating! Congrats also on winning Aust women of the year, we sure are proud of you! We’re coming to see you one day!.

Dear Rachael
Have just finished reading Jillaroo – and loved it.It brought back many memories of Ag college for this city girl. And reminded me there is a great big country out there.More city folk should read books like yours. I can’t wait to get into your next novels, and am recommending you to my mates.Congrats on your rural womens award, and thank goodness for Women’s Weekly as i would never have rediscovered you after losing contact many years ago. Would love to catch up!!!
Your old mate, Vanessa , from Hobart/Townsville
