Doggone, we need a name quick!

The Pup

Here’s our new pup for the Casterton Kelpie Auction in June 2007! Trouble is, John and I can’t agree on a name.

That’s why we’re asking you to submit names in our first ever competition. The winner will receive a personally signed copy of The Stockmen and Jillaroo!

The competition closes in a week as we need the little fella to learn his name, so hurry — get submitting!

Over the next few months I’ll be making notes on how we train him up for the auction — so tune in for step by step Treasure Training Tips!

Later when the pup is auctioned at Casterton — we’ll run another competition and you could receive a signed copy of my brand new book The Rouseabout — due out in May 2007.

Hi Rachael, I’ve stumbled across you’re website again. Isn’t there an often used term “cobber” in Tas. That can be my entry….looking forward to more of you’re writing on the web and in your new book.all the best

Hi Ron from NZ
Thanks for your entry. Cobber is a very Tasmanian term indeed! So is the term ‘Cock’ Tassie friends down here will greet each other with a cheery, ‘G’day Cock!’
Perhaps we could call him Cock? Perhaps not.
I’ll make a note of your entry. You could be the lucky winner and I’ll have to pay more for postage!

BUNDY!! Why not call him Bundy?

My hubby reckons Bundy is “nectar of the gods”, but after a few, it gets him yapping on about nothing, like the pup was when you picked him up.

Well I reckon with the new book on the horizon and the auction falling around the same time ,the name has to be Rouse

Rachael, says:

Keep it rolling guys! They are all top names… especially Rouse! Bob, you’re a genious! At this rate we’ll have names for all our litters for the next five years! Can’t wait for more names so we can have a big name selection in a week.

p.s. Brew and Bundy are names dear to my heart… love a beer and a bundy!

What a cute pup! I think he looks like a ‘Banjo’. A great Aussie dog named after another great Aussie.

One of our friends from the footy club has a 2 week old baby called Banjo! He’s cute too! Even with two legs – not four.

I’ve got two names “Slim” after another aussie legend, and “Bear” as in the Bundy Bear.

I think you should call him “Able” after Able Tasmania, who discovered Tassie. It could have a double meaning too, that he is an able working dog. Can’t wait for the noew book, as I loved the others!

How about Bobby — as in Bobby Dazzler?

Or Bonzer?

Or Ron — as in Kiwi?

I am a semi retired drover, and my best dog was Duke, so that’s my suggestion.

Dogs take after their names. I named him after the Duke of Windsor. You know, the one that married Mrs Simpson. I’ve always been a fan of the royal family even tho I don’t like Poms.

Do those inlaws of yours still do the droving, I’d like to go along. Might learn a bit of how its done in the hills. Did most of my jobs on the dry plains. Like Clancy I suppose. Met his daughter a long time ago.

The eyes are going, can I get you books on tape?

Rachael, says:
October 2nd, 2006 at 9:01 pm

Hi Harry,
Thanks for the suggestion of Duke! In answer to your question about my inlaws going droving – last year our 170 year connection with the land ended due to the Vic Govt’s blanket ban on cattle grazing ‘in the High Country’ due to political, rather than environmental reasons. (There’s not enough room here for me to give my views on the need to classify and manage land according to the environment and not the government!) We still take small mobs up to the freehold country and as a protest will continue our links with the land by putting cattle across that bureacratic line into “National Park” – we’ll also monitor the invasion of weeds there now!
Also – to your second question – I doubt my books are on tape yet, but I will ask my agent how we go about getting them recorded! (We could teach the yet-to-be-named-pup to do the sound affects!)Keep the names rolling!

Keeping with Bobs idea of your new book…Rousta, Rousie, Rouza.
Some Aussie slang that could make good names…Dinkum, Yakka, Boozer, What-a-Ripper, Matilda (for a girl). Is it a dog or a bitch?

Rachael, says:

He’s a dog.

Hi Rachael – my suggestion is Shadow. His colours reflect different shadow shades and also, working dogs tend to shadow their stock at times – so shadow would certainly be appropriate!

Hi Rachael
I think your pup looks like a Jack (Jackaroo)
Good Luck!!

Craig, says:
October 4th, 2006 at 5:39 pm

How about Dusty?? Thats what he is going to be when he is working stock.

Rachael, says:
October 4th, 2006 at 8:08 pm

I’d prefer it if he was working in mud not dust! By Jeez we need some rain here! Summer’s looking like a shocker. Perhaps we could call him Mud-guts ( or Muddy) I’ve been feeding him so much he’s getting a gut on him!

John’s cousin (after a few drinks) suggested, ‘Buggaya.’ eg “Come here Buggaya!”
(Thanks Al and Bon voyage)

I was inspired by Jillaroo that for my year ten creative writing assignment I wrote a story myself about a reporter going to the bush to experience the life. In my book he was given a dog of his own and the names I thought of were between JB, Jim, Jimmy or JimmyB, I chose JB. He looks like a rum drinker so you could just call him Rum cause its all good. So they are my suggestions, and thankyou for putting life back into reading again.
