Castle in a cow paddock

Here’s my hubby, John, sitting in the middle of a dairy farmer’s dream.

Des Brown was the dreamer. When he was grazing his milking cows on a green hilltop near Sheffield he had a vision — one day, he decided, he would build a retreat that showcased the beauty of Tasmania.

Eagle’s Nest is the result.

Recently, we enjoyed Eagle’s Nest as our very own private tower in the middle of a cow paddock with awe inspiring views of Mount Roland that put on a moving picture show from dawn til dusk.

It was a paradise for a writer like me needing to gather my strength for a rewrite on my next novel. And it was a great place for John and I to get our farm planning done for the next financial year.

Eagle’s Nest was brimming with stories about Des’ farm and his dad. From the old horse swingle that held up the mantle piece, to the cream can that spurted forth hotwater for the outdoor spa, to the old box seeder that now contained wood for the fire.

It was not only Tasmanian luxury at its best, but it was also a very practical place to spend time in. You could tell it was designed by a farmer. And that’s what I admire about good farmers… they’re practical, ingenious and ones like Des don’t stop short at dreaming… they just get out and do it.

We’ll go back to Eagle’s Nest again oneday – Des has more dreams to nurture and bring alive there and we’ll be there to support him along the way.

(We urge all farming families to get away from the farm for planning so as to see the big picture. Even if the budget can only afford the local pub for a long lunch and a long chat, it’s worth planning for.)

Check out Eagles Nest Retreat and you maybe inspired to pursue your own dreams.
